Summer in Pennsylvania is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors, soak up some sun and spend time with family and friends. However, for older adults, the hot summer months can be particularly challenging and even dangerous. Seniors are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses, like dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke, because our internal body temperature regulation noticeably changes as we age, unfortunately becoming less effective. But don’t worry—with a few simple tips and the right solutions, you can stay cool and safe all summer long!
Here are five tips for seniors battling the summer heat:
1. Stay Hydrated!
One of the most important things you can do during the summer is to drink plenty of water. Some people don’t feel thirsty even when they’re becoming dehydrated, so it’s essential to drink water regularly throughout the day. Aim for 8-10 glasses of water daily, and consider adding hydrating foods to your diet, like watermelon, cucumber and citrus fruits. Avoid drinks with caffeine and alcohol, as these are counteractive and dehydrate your body.
Residents, family members and guests of our communities can stop by to try the summer menu specials at Founder’s Fare at Luther Village on campus at Lutheran Community at Telford or the Hilltop Harvest dining room at The Community at Rockhill. No matter your generation, don’t forget to drink plenty of fluids during your meal!
2. Dress for the Heat.
Choosing the right clothing for the climate can make a big difference in how your body handles heat. Wear loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothing that reflects the sun’s rays rather than absorbing them. If you like to accessorize, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are the perfect add-ons to protect your head, face and eyes from direct sunlight.
3. Avoid the Hottest Parts of the Day
During summer, the sun’s rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If possible, plan your independent outdoor activities for the early morning or late evening when temperatures are lower, like those on our Life Enrichment calendar.
If you must venture out during the hottest hours, seek shade whenever possible and take frequent breaks in cooler areas. The recently restored, .8-mile long nature trail at Rockhill (pictured below) is a perfect place to birdwatch and enjoy the outdoors, while still being protected from the sun under a canopy of tall trees.

Additionally, the patio overlooking our shuffleboard courtyard in Lutheran Community at Telford’s Center for Community Life allows comfortable, round-table seating shaded by umbrellas, acting as the perfect spot to connect with friends outdoors—and out of the sun!

4. Keep Cool… Indoors & Out
Air conditioning can quickly become your greatest companion during the hot summer months. After following the previous three tips, consider spending time in the air-conditioned common areas on campus, like the woodshop, The Gallery at Rockhill or Billiards room at Telford.
Both The Community at Rockhill and Lutheran Community at Telford have an indoor pool to dip in and cool off on Bucks County’s hottest days! Our LiveWell program offers regular aquatics courses for residents who strive for an active lifestyle. If you want a change of scene, catch The Loop shuttle to the opposite campus for an alternate wellness experience!

Within your residence, closing window curtains or blinds during the day conserves energy of powering your utilities by reducing the amount of solar heat gain. Using a tower or box fan in your apartment or cottage can help circulate air and make the home feel cooler.
Similarly, there are many modern solutions in the retail market that make staying cool outdoors even easier. Today you can find rechargeable or battery-powered, portable fans that are tabletop, handheld or even fit around the back of your neck, and serve as a great travel item to keep in your car or pocketbook for use outside as needed, all summer long.
5. Check on Yourself and Others
It is absolutely crucial to monitor your own health and the health of those around you during times of extreme heat. Keep an eye out for symptoms of heat-related illnesses including dizziness, headaches, rapid heartbeat, nausea or confusion. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. It’s also a good idea to check in regularly with your family, friends and neighbors, especially if they live by themselves.
Staying Cool
This coming season should be a time of fun and relaxation, yet it’s essential to take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones from the dangers of heat. By staying hydrated, carefully planning your activities and your wardrobe, cooling your living space efficiently and staying alert, you can enjoy a safe and comfortable summer.
So, stay cool, stay cautious and make the most of these sunny days!
